The history of Swiss data protection law has its origins in civil laws for the protection of personal human rights.

The Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), ratified in 1992, also represents a separate area of the fundamental human right to privacy. This Act has been revised and updated for several times to keep up with the society development. This year we will celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The latest revision of the FADP comes into force in the course of 2022. It implements the requirements of the Council of Europe's modernised Convention 108 on the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data and aligns with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) (GDPR).
